about

The African American Congressman, Adam Clayton Powell Jr, husband of pianist Hazel Scott, had long been an advocate for including jazz in cultural tours.

Powell lobbied Congress for positive engagement with the newly liberated nations of Asia and Africa. But when his arguments fell on deaf ears, so he decided to take matters into his own hands, and in April 1955, he travelled as a journalist to Bandung, Indonesia, to attend the world’s first Afro-Asian Conference.
