Congressman Adam Clayton Powells credentials, burnished by his success in Bandung, was able to convince Eisenhower and top ranking foreign policy officials in late 1955, that jazz, played by black or mixed race bands, could radically improve America’s image in the non-white countries of the world.

Dizzy Gillespie head-lined the first State Department sponsored tour in March 1956 and lasted for ten weeks. Adam Clayton Powell was instrumental in getting the tour off the ground.
