about

In the mid 1950s Louis Armstrong was an internationally known jazz artist.
By the end of 1956 the US State Department were thinking that Armstrong would be their next cultural ambassador. A trip to Russia was on the cards.

Contract negotiations carried on into 1957 when the unfolding school desegregation crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas caused Armstrong to question his role as a prospective ambassador for his country. The whole world was watching as mobs of white people intimidated and threatened the 9 highschool children. Eisenhower refused to send in federal troops to guarantee the children’s safety.

Armstrong was highly critical of the government’s inaction. Voicing his criticism made headline news and in late September Armstrong withdrew from negotiations to visit the USSR.
